Really Good for the PriceOctober 11, 2008 I had a Gateway for 6 years and finally I needed to upgrade, mostly I needed a video card. Since my old pc had a micro-tower case, upgrading would have been more trouble than it would have been worth, and the pc was having some minor issues. I finally was able to get a new pc, and decided on this one because it was all I could afford, but with the plan to upgrade later on. So far I love it. Of course, I got rid of Vista as that was just causing problems with a lot of the software I use and am back to using my old XP. The only reason I gave this pc 4 stars is because the keyboard is not that great and the mouse is terrible. The speed is really good, of course this one is about 4 times my old pc, but I can play several games I couldn't play before, and I haven't even gotten a video card yet. Finally I can play The Sims 2 with expansions, and SimCity 4 Deluxe doesn't crash anymore. Unfortunately, I still can't play Age of Empires 3...yet. The system is also extremely quiet, which is very nice for me since I have the pc in my bedroom and could never leave the old one on when I wanted to sleep. I admit I am very biased towards Gateway - every good pc we have ever had in my house was always a Gateway, but I have good computer knowledge so I never need their tech support. I know people who have had other brand pc's and had so much trouble with them, but it really comes down to your personal pc knowledge. (My friends usually call me first for tech help.)
As for the bad review that was written, it sounds more like it was a Windows issue and therefore not fair to blame the pc. But I do know Gateway charges you just to wink at their tech support, which again I have never needed. Of course, Gateway is also no longer a USA based company, but I have heard a lot of good things about Acer as well (the company that bought them). It is also worth noting this model has received great reviews on Gateway's website (with the exception of mine, but only because of the cheap accessories).
Gateway to hell.....August 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought a Gateway and Windows got hosed for some reason. We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Anything but Gateway.
