 Exceeded my expectations December 5, 2008
First of all, prior to buying this laptop, I only looked at the stats. The selling points for me was the large hard drive, and the extremely light weight. Aside from the identical stats, like the Atom processor and the RAM, and 6 cell battery, the HHD and weight were the very reason I bought this laptop. However, after I purchased it, I started getting scared for several reasons after looking at actual older reviews.
Problems with a loud fan noise.
WiFi problems (worried me the most.)
Battery sticking out a LOT.
So I started regretting buying it, looking at as many good reviews as I could to change my mind.
However, after it arrived, my expectations were exceeded. The fan made no noise at all, except under some load it makes a small whirring noise. I downloaded the temperature program (because temperatures exceed the norms for no reason) and it never made a sound again.
WiFi worked perfectly. Perhaps they fixed the WiFi problems in the newer Acer Aspire One's, with updated Bios and software. I assume that any new model will have great working WiFi. When I fiddled with some networking components in the add custom software tab in the add/remove programs, and deleted the Touch Point software that came with the unit, the WiFi didn't work for me on the first day. I couldn't connect. After a eRestore (software comes with the netbook) it worked perfectly. My guess was that the Touch Point software affected my WiFi somehow, so I would not touch that as it controls the keyboard hotkeys (e.g. fn+5 for sound mute).
After looking at pictures of the "HUGE" 6 cell battery I was concerned because the aesthetics was something that drew me to this laptop. However, when seen in real life, the battery does not look big at all. I don't know if pictures had 3-4 inches on it, but the battery as if it's apart of the netbook. After instant evaluation, it complemented the netbook perfectly.
Performance is great as expected, hard drive space is large. Haven't had any problems at all with the laptop. When a lot of programs are run over a period of time, the bottom gets slightly warm, which is a part of all Intel Atom chipsets on all netbooks. So that is something to expect. It comes up slightly warm rarely so I'm not going to put a lot of emphasis on it.
Overall great netbook, great look. Got mine in white and love how it looks!

Absolute junk. It didn't boot up...ever. I charged the battery completely, made sure the power cord was okay, restarted it....nothing worked. Then, I looked at some of the worst reviews this thing's received. This is NOT the first time this problem has been reported.
Ohh...one more thing, good luck getting customer support on the phone. Acer sucks!!

I'm always on the lookout for an extremely light weight small laptop that is 1)affordable 2) under 3 lbs 3) has decent battery life, and 4) sufficient hard drive memory. Thought it was impossible. I had a 3 lb sharp from when they made computers, that actually did include a dvd drive, but it had a tiny hard drive that was obsolete for today's applications. Most little computers were outrageously expensive, or still had relatively scanty hard drives, and the latter problem includes those relatively inexpensive ones from the big computer companies. This one has everything, except for dvd drive, but you can get a cheap mini one at micro center for the twice a year at least I need to download something from a dvd. Otherwise this is terrific, and has surprisingly speedy performance. Wifi worked out of the box quickly too. Being a small person is finally paying off, since it is possible someone with large hands might have issues with the key board, but my child size hands are just fine. That's really only the down side I can think of. Obviously,you wouldn't opt to have this as your only computer, unless you're someone who is hiking across country, but as a full menu computer that you can toss and take with you, you won't do better unless you're willing to spend about 7x as much money.

i am looking for a portable unit for my Honey as a Xmas/Birthday gift ... and by comparison to other units available, i find this one to be outstanding ... I am about to place the order moentarily.
it is to be noted that it is a Portable Unit of smaller dimentions compared to the regular Notebook, of which I have 3 already (HP, Dell & Sony), the capasity is superior to any of the units I already possess in terms of Physical Memory.
when I was going through the reviews posted, I note a few points that I think needed addressing, as an IT Specialist. when you are buying a NETBOOK, it is configured for light Usage, meaning it is not intended to be used for Heavy Resource Hungry applications such as multimedia production and the like. if that's what you need, a NETBOOK is NOT the best of options. suggest that you look into a Desktop or Top Line Laptop for that requirement.
This machine is intended for light duty work, online Surfing, Email and IM, as well as Document processing (Word, Excel and Powerpoint). it can be used for Audio PlayBack, and for Video As well (thou the screen is a bit too small for that, it is still acceptable for shorter duration). the configuration does not provide the power to be able to do Video Editing, but as mentioned, who does that while on the road???.
As far as the source is concerned, I suggest you get it DIRECTLY from Amazon, rather than the additional stores that may be available through Amazon. My reason for this is (I have been a customer at Amazon for the last 10+ years) their reputation is outstanding, whereas the others, thou not saying it always be the case, have so many clauses and hidden terms that if a problem should arise, (Murphy's Law) they frequently comes up with so many different excusses not to help out the customer, (Time span, coverage, advertised terms, general practice etc). on the other hand, when it comes to Amazon, thou they not Perfect, one cant expect anyone to be, their customer service, both in responce as well as solution of the situation has been noted to be outstanding in terms of Promptness and suggestions. so I say, even if it be a few $$$ more, it is worth it, if for nothing else, then just for the peace of mind.
as for the prospective customers, who are in the market for a unit like this, I would suggest that you take a small trip to your local Electronic store (Circuit City, Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, Target all carry these units, or the smaller model) and try out the unit, just to get the feel of it, so that you can evaluate whether or not it is what you are looking for, and in the process, if you happen to find it for a better NET price, thou I doubt it be the case, by all means get it from there. When I say net price, it be final amount that you pay for the unit, TAX and Shipping included.
as far as the oprating system is concerned... the unit ships with Windows XP, which especially for portable units with limited resources, is supperior to the Windows Vista, though being a former release. My Desktop as well as my HP and Dell Laptop runs on XP, which I by experience feel more comfortable with, i have the Vista on my Sony Laptop, which although being a fine product (No Offence) just is not "My cup of tea" if you know the expression. Vista may have its benefits, but the thing that I dislike about it is the 'File management' ie the way it organises the Users Documents. amittedly, i experienced the same in the beginning when I transfered from Win98 to Xp as well, bout far from in the magnitude that it be the case with Vista. I have been a regular user of the Windows OS ever since the 2.0 back in 1989, i may still have the program somewhere in my library, and I note the Improvements in the development with 3 exemptions. a. Windows 2000, which was NOT for Domestic Usage in the first place, too complicated to configure, Windows ME, which by the way was the WORST product I ever Incountered. and then the Vista ... i noticed that the machine is available in a LINUX version too, but I'll suggest that, unless you are Computer Savvy, and know what you are doing, try to avoid that. Nothing against the Linux OS as of such, it is a good OS, very limited Resource requirement and all, but as it is NOT a mainstream OS, it is not always the best of choice. plus the physical configuration of the system is inferior compared to the Windows XP Units.
As for the upgradability of the unit, it is very Limited ... but that is a general rule when you go for a portable unit, you, by default, sacrifice the Upgradability for the Portability. but a 160gb HDD is more than enough for any regular user. 5gb for OS and drivers, an other 5gb for the office software, 10gb for misc. 'on the road' products, it still leaves about 120 GB for User Data. (Taken into account that a 160gb HDD when formated and configured actually only have a capacity of 142GB). i have these figures from my IPOD Classic, which is 160gb as well. given an average document be of 5MB (one full of pictures and all), there should be room enough to store about 30000 ducuments on the system without any problem... (almost 10 copies of Encyclopedia Britanica in its full) and to be honest ... how many people actually need to carry that many documents around???
the Battery capacity is advertised to be 6 hrs (actual 3.5 to 5 depending on NATURE of Usage). that is perfect, given it be true. on the road, it is seldom that you be walking on the street and using your computer at the same time... in reality, you use it in your car, or at your local Starbuck... and there is always a way to connect it to a power source at both places ... (at starbuck... all you need to do is ask NICELY, and they will let you use an outlet while you consuming your coffee or tea or capucchino). and if your means of transportation is the PUBLIC Transport, i have hard to imaging that your daily commute be more than 5 hours each way. Air Travel does provide external Power source as well. you just have to get hold of a proper Power Adapter, usually available at all electronics outlets in a proximity of $30 to $50.
by what i can see from others reviews, McAffee seems to be causing a disruption in the WiFi setup. as a technocrat, i'll say, thou McAffee used to be an outstanding product, it has lately been known to cause configuration problems as it automatically activates the "Firewall" which by default limits the access from the unit in question to any external system on a network, either a local LAN or the internet in general. i havent tried the unit myself yet, but i know of this situation cuz i have a domestic network of 7 laptops and 3 desktops set up in my home. my sugestion be ... try see if you can find an alternative to the McAffee, or use a local Anti Virus protection product instead of the Network versions. that should do the trick.
as for the fan noice thing, which i notice a lot of people mentioning... you must have a very sensitive hearing sense to be able to notice it. again... just for the sake of argument, let it be clear that the fan is a physical piece of plastic rotating at high speed, so it is bound to make some noise, there is no way around that fact. the speed of the fan is adjusted automatically by the system based on the temperature of the unit. it will run slower when the unit is cold and the speed will increase with the change in temperature of the unit. just a suggestion be ... check the ventilation of the system, make sure the exhaust vent, normally on the bottom of the unit, is free. if the noise still exibits to be too high, check the vent for dust abstractions. it is to be noted that the computer does not produce any coolant of its own, but use the air avaiable in the environment to do the cooling. it is just an observation, but the air carries lots of impurities, thou not visible to the bare eye. over the passage of time, these particles accumulates in the ventilator, causing either obstractions in the fans movement or exhaust properties thereof. so the fan has to move harder to keep the unit cold enough. as a thumbs rule, just like you clean your hands and face every now and then, regular clean up of the system could be a good idea as well. it does not require any technical know how, just use a condensed air blower, available all over the place for $5 or less, blow the vent, that should do the trick. and a canister should be able to last you for almost 6 months. not a bad investment ($1/month) compared to a melt down that will render your entire investment of (for this unit) $400 worthless. and make no mistake, no waranty, manufacturer or otherwise, will cover you in that case, cuz it is what is classified as "Abusive Use" or "Wear & Tear" (both Exemptions from coverage, the microscopic print on your Insurance/waranty Policies, check it out). trust me on that. I have been working in the IT industry for the last 18+ years. i know what i am talking about.
as for the speaker not giving a proper sound. sure enough, as mentionedby other users, what can you expect from speakers in the size of a DIME. then again, it is a Portable unit, meaning you will be using it "on the go" so to speak. just for the sake, my suggestion be USE some headphones instead, it will channel the sound perfectly for your hearing and it will not disturb the people in your surrounding. how often has it happened that you are traveling down the Hudson in Metro, and you are sitting doing your thing and someone walks up to you and ask you to turn down the volune because the sound is diturbing their chain of thoughts. or you sitting in the train or bus and are being force to listen to someone else's conversation on the phone, merely because their voice is too loud for the environment. if you have ever experienced either situation, you will know what i am talking about. common courtacy states that you should have consideration for your environment, if for no other reason, then just to avoid the ackward situation of someone else having to tell you so. i am not saying you should get one of those $1000 'noice cancelation' headphones, the $10 one from your local corner store would be just fine. i can't figure the sense in spending a thousand dollars on customized headphones in the first place, cuz even if you rip 10 of the regular ones in a year, it is still less than the $1000 for the specials, and trust me, no matter how carefully you treat them, the seldom last you more than a year.

Ultra portable and fully function December 4, 2008
I am happy with my aa1 and I would buy it again for myself or as a gift. Other reviews complained about the fan but I just hardly hear it. I got the white aa1 and I love the color. It is much nicer than the blue one which I saw in a store. No fingerprints here at all. The screen is crisp and bright. I did make the fonts a bit bigger but other than that I can see everything just fine. I Auto hide the task bar to see certain popups so I can see the "i accept buttons" You can't adjust the size in some of those.
It is fully booted in less than a minute.
The video card isn't able to handle Second Life game very well so if it is games you want to play check the requirements for the game.
I was able to copy one of my program cds onto a large flash drive and it auto loaded the program as if I had used a cd. I might buy an external cdrom in the future though.
It is small enough to fit in my regular purse and sturdy enough to hand it. I did however but a dvd player case made by Targus that fits it like a glove and holds all the cords and usb flash drives I need as well as all the manuals and paper work it came with.
I have only had a connect problem a few times so it doesn't bother me I restart and it fixes itself so I wonder if it my wireless hub. The keyboard is a bit cramped but I have small hands. This would be perfect for a young person.
I love it.
