Amazon.com Talk about an opening. The first few minutes of John Carpenter's Vampires--in which James Woods's vampire killer leads a dawn raid on a New Mexico "goon nest" of bloodsuckers--not only suggests a horror movie that will not pull any punches, it even evokes some of the more disturbing dream-memories of American Westerns. Muscular and uncompromised, the sequence suggests a new Carpenter classic unraveling before one's eyes. Well, dream on. Things don't quite work out that way, but this is still a film to reckon with. There are a few serious (and surprising) misjudgments on the director's part, particularly a mishandling of Sheryl Lee's role as a prostitute poisoned by the bite of a "master vampire" (who pretty much wiped out Woods's team of goon terminators). But aside from some weaknesses, the action is jolting, the suggested complicity of the Catholic Church in destroying monsters is provocative, and the traces of Howard Hawks's continuing influence on Carpenter's storytelling are in evidence. --Tom Keogh

Best Vampire after Bram Stroker's November 29, 2008 This movie present vampires not as a movie , comic , novel or any literary characters. Instead it manage to make an impression that vampires do exist and live among us. And that imagery itself will get you bone chills
Great vampire flick November 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great vampire movie with a good balance of suspense and blood. Some stories in the genre are too heavy on the character's personal stories and light on the gore, or vice versa, but not this well written horror. James Woods is a 'suave' and savvy vampire killer who lets his guard down with the most ruthless head vampire he's ever encountered. He finds out too late he's been double crossed...the blood suckers knew he was coming...but who is the traitor amongst the day walkers and why? Worthy of a space on my 'favorite horror' flicks shelf.

Humor, gore and fright April 21, 2008 This movie has humor, gore and some scary scenes. As a horror movie it is a little lame, but as a vampire movie it is a nice change in plot.
The End Was Pretty Good... I Mean The Credits. April 5, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Maybe because it was going to be over soon, it felt like this movie was more enjoyable at the end. The first half of this movie is pretty lame. I thought that James Woods wasn't up to his usual par. Daniel Baldwin was great, but that's because he is kind of a B-List actor and this is a B-List movie. It felt like it should have been on the USA Network or something. There were some cool things to this movie. The plot was pretty good, not the best story but fairly good. Overall I think it could have been better if it had better actors and was a little more scary. It was too rock & roll for me. I would have liked it more if it was creepy. They had a good premise to make it creepy, especially since the church was involved and I find the church to be creepy. Exorcism is a creepy premise too, but they wasted all of these things in favor of action. 3 stars because the ending was pretty good... and it was finally over.
