Editorial Reviews:
Product Description A powerful epic mini-series shot on location in Spain that tells the story of one of the most amazing women in history, St. Teresa of Avila. With meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy, outstanding production values, and an incredible performance by actress Concha Velasco as Teresa, this acclaimed major film production is the definitive film on the life of this great saint. Teresa of Avila was called by God to reform and renew the Carmelite order, a daunting task. She was joined in this work by her great fellow Carmelite and spiritual director, St. John of the Cross. This film reveals the conversion that Teresa herself had to go thru to deepen her own union with Christ as she endeavored to bring about that same deeper spiritual reform of her Carmelite order. It shows the tremendous opposition that she and John both faced within (and without) their order to bring about this much needed spiritual renewal. She and John of the Cross were both great mystics who combined the essential dimensions of a profound spiritual life with the very practical aspects of being completely dedicated to the human tasks necessary for such a reform. In Spanish with English subtitles.
Wonderful!December 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is amazing, but the lead actress both looked and acted exactly as how I have always thought Saint Teresa would have looked and acted. She did such a great job! The movie was very well done, and although I would have liked to have seen more attention paid to her mystical experiences and her spiritual trials, there was still plenty in this movie to show what an amazing woman this saint was. I definitely recommend this movie. It has an aura about it that really makes you feel as if you are in the Spain of her time. It takes you into the Carmelite spirit in a way. And, the sets are so well done! In some scenes it looked so much like the real Monastery of the Incarnation in Avila that I had to get out my photos to double check! Great film.
St. Teresa of AvilaDecember 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
An epic film, this is an amazing experience I have to say, as it takes quite a while to get through. I watched an episode a night and it took nearly a week. The story is not as clear as it might be and could be somewhat confusing to those who have no idea about St Theresa's life. But I have to rate this film of a saint highly. Beautifully filmed and acted by a stellar cast.
Wow!!!!November 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie came quickly. It was as seller described. This movie was wonderful, even with the English sub-titles. I had to pause at times, to take notes of St. Teresa's instructions to her sisters. To see the reality of the opposition of those in the same faith who do not understand deeper devotion to Jesus, was heart breaking. This sad reality is pretty much across the board in all Christ denominations. The wonderful thing to watch is Teresa' resolve to obey the invitation of Jesus to come closer and live simply. She is one of my mentors....in my own journey of spiritual marriage.
If you like Teresa' books and want to see her life on film, then this movie is for you. If you sense a drawing from Holy Spirit to come closer to Jesus' heart....do not fear the opposition...He will be worth it all....LET'S RUN TO HIM TOGETHER...
A Must have!September 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had watched this series on Cable, and was glad to purchase it now. This is a masterpiece: The quality of the acting is superb, the scripts are of great depth and bring to life complex, multi-dimensional characters, especially St. Teresa of Avila. The re-creation of the historical period is very believable and shows careful attention to detail. This production is easily something that can be used as entertaining or as a resource for reflexion and study, or both.

Superlative production. Outstanding acting, writing, and directing. The production design is flawless - watching it is to go back in time to the 16th century and witness the life of St. Teresa unfold (no Hollywood-like sets here). A mature, thoughtful, well-researched, and respectful treatment of this great saint. Don't be concerned about the English subtitles; they do not detract at all from the enjoyment of this captivating movie. (I ordered this DVD set from Spain when Region 1 (U.S./Canada) was not available yet, and played it on my computer; so delighted it is finally in a format we can see on our TV's in the U.S.). For those with a devotion to St. Teresa, or for anyone who enjoys the lives of saints, it does not get any better than this.
