An auspicious debut film May 4, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Carlos Saura Medrano, son of the famous Spanish Director Carlos Saura, makes an impact with his first film TU QUE HARIAS POR AMOR...JUST RUN! Not only is the story worth telling, it is well told. Saura Medrano has a keen sense of movement and mood and is able to capture a bleak, noir story and make it a universal tale of the importance of familial bonding.Milio (Alberto Escobar) is a thirteen-year-old kid on the brink of adolescence who lives with his mother (Geraldine Chaplin) and older brother Luis (Fele Martinez, in another fine acting part). Luis and Milio are part of the low life drug dealing life in the outskirts of Madrid and Luis is making a mark for himself as on of three "Capitanes" - the other two being Lanas (Aitor Merino) and Santos (Israel Rodriguez). They work for the drug lord Don Vicente (Francisco Rabal) and his henchmen, including the bad apple Lobo (Patxi Freytez). Luis is in love with Santos' sister Sira (Silke) and when a drug deal goes wrong and Santos is killed, Luis tries to escape the world of crime and goes into hiding. Sira, hurt and vengeful, begins to date Lobo, and Luis fees his entire world is falling apart. "How much would you do for Love?" his buddy Lanas asks, and Luis answers "Tear out my heart." While Luis is hiding from the public eye, evil with Don Vicente erupts further, even to the point of young Milio and his best friend, played by Santiago Etombayambo, pressing their graffiti pranks too close to the beehive of Don Vicente. Tragedy follows tragedy and in the end it is the character of Milio who has grown from all of the wasteful experiences that involvement in the drug dealing life have brought. Saura Medrano directs his solid cast with a keen eye for verismo and despite some of the bizarre events he elects to display, the film holds on to the main point of sensitively exploring the meaning of brotherhood, whether in the family or in companions. The cinematography is under the amazing skills of Jose Luis Lopez Linares and Teo Delgado and Carlo Silotto composed the superb musical score. With the skills of gathering such fine cast and crew, Carlos Saura Medrano bows onto the Spanish cinema scene with a highly successful first movie. In Spanish with English subtitles.
