Description This never-before-released program on video begins with a sensational performance by Arkadi Zenziper of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor op. 18. This is followed by a commanding performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor, op. 64 by the St. Petersburg State Orchestra conducted by V. Tschemuschenko. An in-depth philosophical interview with Arkadi Zenziper is included. Additional features on this DVD release are chapters for each tempo/mood change with optional display, liner notes, biographical information about the conductor, the Orchestra and Arkadi Zenziper as well as the contemporary history of the pieces performed. Audio playback options are 5.1 Dolby Digital and non-compressed stereo.

Competent orchestra, conductor and piano player January 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked very much this DVD. Well, it is not difficult for me to like the pieces of Tchaikosvsky and Rachmaninov. They are my favorites composers. The player in No. 2 concerto is plenty is sensibility and vigorous emotion. The solemnity of Symphony No.5 is well demonstrated by the orchestra with many young people doing a good job under secure direction of the conductor.
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 January 23, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am absolutely delighted with this DVD. The Rachmaninov performance is what I am really after and the Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5 is an added bonus.
Glowing October 24, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Loved the clarity of the DVD & would highly recommend the item for classical music lovers everywhere. One negative is the interview with Russian pianist. I only want music. But this is a minor distraction. Buy it I& enjoy both Rachmaninoff & Tchaikovsky!
Great concerto, so-so recording. May 2, 2005 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have owned this DVD since it came out and am still disappointed with it. While it's great to have this concerto on DVD, the performance of it is quite poor. The camera work and the DVD itself is quite good, giving good shots of the performer's hands. Still, he makes SEVERAL noticable mistakes in his performance. I couldn't imagine him getting much of an ovation at a major symphony hall. The performance of the symphony, though, is quite good. I'd recommend it. Overall, it's a DVD worth having, but not worth getting giddy over.
